General Liability Insurance
Protecting Your Business. Keeping You Moving.
Operating a trucking company involves more than transporting freight. From daily business activities and customer interactions to operations at terminals and other facilities, trucking businesses face liability exposures that extend beyond commercial vehicle accidents.
General Liability Insurance helps protect trucking companies against covered third-party bodily injury, property damage, and certain personal and advertising injury claims arising from business operations.
Our agency specializes in transportation insurance solutions designed to help owner-operators, motor carriers, and trucking fleets protect their businesses against a wide range of operational risks.

What Is General Liability Insurance?
Commercial General Liability (CGL) Insurance provides financial protection against certain claims arising from business operations that are not covered by a Commercial Auto Liability policy. While Auto Liability Insurance primarily addresses covered accidents involving commercial vehicles, General Liability Insurance focuses on other business-related exposures, such as premises liability, certain operational activities, and personal or advertising injury claims. For trucking companies, both types of coverage can play an important role in a comprehensive insurance program.
What Does General Liability Insurance Cover?
Depending on the policy terms, General Liability Insurance may include:
Premises Liability provides protection against covered third-party bodily injury or property damage claims occurring at business premises, such as offices, terminals, and other operating locations.
Bodily Injury Liability provides coverage for qualifying injuries sustained by third parties as a result of covered business activities.
Property Damage Liability protects against covered claims involving damage to another person's property arising from insured business operations, subject to exclusions.
Personal and Advertising Injury may provide protection against certain claims involving libel, slander, wrongful eviction, and other offenses defined in the policy.
Products and Completed Operations may provide coverage for qualifying bodily injury or property damage claims arising from covered products or completed work, subject to policy exclusions.
Legal Defense Expenses generally provides defense against covered liability claims, subject to the policy's terms and conditions.
Is General Liability Insurance Required for Trucking Companies?
General Liability Insurance is generally not a separate federal FMCSA insurance requirement for motor carriers transporting general freight. However, freight brokers, shippers, warehouses, and other business partners may require trucking companies to maintain General Liability coverage as part of their contractual agreements. A commonly requested limit is $1 million per occurrence and $2 million general aggregate, although requirements vary by contract and business operation. Even when coverage is not contractually required, General Liability Insurance can provide valuable protection against certain business-related liability exposures.
What Does General Liability Insurance Not Cover?
General Liability Insurance is not intended to replace other essential trucking insurance coverages.
Common exclusions or limitations may involve:
-
Commercial vehicle accidents covered under Auto Liability Insurance.
-
Damage to freight requiring Motor Truck Cargo Insurance.
-
Employee work-related injuries addressed by Workers' Compensation Insurance.
-
Damage to the company's own trucks and equipment.
-
Professional errors or omissions requiring specialized liability coverage.
-
Certain pollution-related losses.
Coverage depends on the policy wording, endorsements, and applicable exclusions.
Who Needs General Liability Insurance?
General Liability Insurance may be appropriate for:
-
Owner-Operators: Independent trucking businesses seeking protection against covered non-auto liability exposures.
-
Small Trucking Companies: Motor carriers managing daily business activities and contractual insurance requirements.
-
Established Fleets: Transportation businesses operating terminals, offices, and other facilities.
-
Specialized Transportation Operations: Companies involved in freight handling, logistics, or other activities that may create additional liability exposures.
