What Is Occupational Accident Insurance?

Occupational Accident Insurance (OCC/ACC) is a specialized insurance product that provides defined benefits for qualifying injuries sustained while performing covered occupational activities. Unlike traditional Workers' Compensation Insurance, Occupational Accident coverage generally offers benefits based on predetermined policy limits, eligibility requirements, and benefit schedules. Motor carriers may offer or require this coverage as part of their independent contractor programs, subject to applicable laws and contractual arrangements.

What Does Occupational Accident Insurance Cover?

Depending on the policy, coverage may include:

Accident Medical Expenses provides benefits for eligible medical treatment, hospitalization, and other covered healthcare expenses resulting from qualifying occupational accidents.

Temporary Disability Benefits provides specified income replacement benefits when a covered injury temporarily prevents an insured driver from working.

Permanent Disability Benefits may provide scheduled benefits for qualifying permanent disabilities resulting from covered accidents.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment provides specified benefits in the event of accidental death or qualifying loss of a limb, eyesight, or other covered injury.

Who Needs Occupational Accident Insurance?

This coverage may be appropriate for:

  • Independent Owner-Operators: Drivers operating under lease agreements with authorized motor carriers.

  • Independent Contractors: Eligible transportation contractors seeking financial protection against occupational injuries.

  • Trucking Companies: Motor carriers establishing insurance requirements or benefit programs for their contracted owner-operators.

Coverage eligibility and requirements depend on the individual's employment classification, applicable state laws, and insurance policy terms.

Occupational Accident vs. Workers' Compensation Insurance

Although both coverages address work-related injuries, they are not interchangeable. Occupational Accident Insurance provides specified benefits according to the policy's coverage limits, exclusions, and benefit schedules. Workers' Compensation Insurance is a statutory insurance system that provides benefits to eligible employees under applicable state laws. Occupational Accident Insurance does not automatically satisfy Workers' Compensation requirements. Motor carriers should evaluate worker classification and state-specific obligations before selecting coverage.
