What Is Motor Truck Cargo Insurance?

Motor Truck Cargo Insurance is designed to protect motor carriers against covered loss of or damage to freight in their care, custody, and control while performing transportation services. Cargo can be exposed to numerous risks throughout the shipping process, including vehicle accidents, theft, fire, equipment failures, and certain loading or unloading incidents. Without appropriate insurance protection, a trucking company may face significant financial responsibility when a shipment is damaged or lost. Coverage varies by insurance carrier and policy form. Understanding what is insured, which causes of loss are covered, and what exclusions apply is essential when selecting cargo insurance for your trucking operation.

What Does Motor Truck Cargo Insurance Cover?

Depending on the policy terms, Motor Truck Cargo Insurance may provide protection for the following exposures:

Cargo Damage From Accidents. Coverage for insured freight damaged as a result of a covered vehicle collision, overturn, or other qualifying transportation accident.

Cargo Theft. Protection against covered theft of cargo, subject to policy conditions, security requirements, and applicable theft exclusions.

Fire and Certain Other Perils. Coverage for insured freight damaged or destroyed by fire and other causes of loss included in the policy.

Loading and Unloading Losses. Certain policies may cover cargo damage occurring during loading or unloading operations. Coverage depends on the policy wording and applicable endorsements.

Refrigeration Breakdown. Optional coverage may be available for spoilage of temperature-sensitive freight resulting from qualifying refrigeration equipment breakdowns, subject to policy conditions and exclusions.

Is Motor Truck Cargo Insurance Required by Law?

Federal cargo insurance filing requirements depend on the type of motor carrier and the commodities transported.

Most interstate for-hire motor carriers transporting general property are not required by the FMCSA to maintain a federal cargo insurance filing. However, certain household goods motor carriers are subject to federal cargo financial responsibility requirements.

Even when cargo insurance is not federally mandated, freight brokers, shippers, and transportation contracts frequently require motor carriers to maintain specified cargo insurance limits before accepting shipments.  For many trucking companies, cargo insurance is therefore an important contractual and financial protection requirement.

How Much Cargo Insurance Does a Trucking Company Need?

Cargo insurance limits should reflect the maximum value of freight transported, the commodities hauled, and applicable customer or broker requirements.

A $100,000 cargo limit is commonly requested in general freight transportation contracts. However, that amount may be insufficient for certain operations, including high-value machinery, electronics, specialized equipment, and other valuable commodities.

Motor carriers should also consider whether the policy includes per-vehicle, per-occurrence, or other limits that may affect the amount available for a particular loss.

Our agency helps trucking businesses evaluate cargo insurance options based on their specific transportation operations and coverage requirements.

Common Cargo Insurance Exclusions and Limitations

Not every cargo loss is automatically covered. Depending on the policy, exclusions or limitations may apply to:

  • Unattended or improperly secured vehicles and trailers.

  • Theft involving certain parking locations or security conditions.

  • Temperature-related losses without appropriate refrigeration coverage.

  • Improper packaging, loading, or securement.

  • Certain high-value, restricted, or excluded commodities.

  • Employee dishonesty, fraud, or voluntary parting with freight.

  • Unexplained disappearance or inventory shortages.

  • Certain delays, deterioration, or inherent characteristics of the cargo.

Note: A policy described as "All Risk" does not mean every possible loss is covered. All-risk and named-perils forms have different coverage structures, and both may contain exclusions, conditions, deductibles, and limitations.

Specialized Cargo Insurance Considerations

Different transportation operations present different cargo exposures. Selecting appropriate coverage requires understanding the freight being hauled and the conditions under which it is transported.

General Freight and Dry Van. Coverage considerations may include theft, collision-related damage, and commodity-specific exclusions.

Refrigerated Transportation. Temperature-controlled operations may require refrigeration breakdown coverage, temperature deviation protection, and compliance with maintenance and monitoring requirements.

Flatbed and Open-Deck Transportation. Open-deck operations may face additional exposures involving cargo securement, weather, shifting loads, and damage during loading or unloading.

Heavy Haul and Specialized Equipment. Transporting machinery, construction equipment, and oversized loads may require higher cargo limits, specialized underwriting, and careful review of commodity eligibility.

High-Value Commodities. Electronics, pharmaceuticals, and other valuable freight may require special limits, endorsements, or additional insurance arrangements.

What Affects Motor Truck Cargo Insurance Premiums?

Insurance companies consider several factors when evaluating cargo insurance applications:

  • Types and maximum values of commodities transported.

  • Cargo insurance limits and deductibles.

  • Number of trucks and size of the fleet.

  • Operating territories and typical routes.

  • Claims history and previous cargo losses.

  • Theft prevention and cargo security practices.

  • Vehicle and trailer types.

  • Experience of the motor carrier and its drivers.

Providing complete and accurate information about your operations helps insurance underwriters evaluate the risk and determine appropriate terms.
